Musculoskeletal Disorders: a Holistic Approach

A Complex Network of Bones, Muscles, Tendons, Ligaments, and Joints

The human body and the various elements of the musculoskeletal system enable movement and provide stability and strength. Musculoskeletal pain can arise from a variety of conditions and injuries, significantly impacting quality of life. At Dolomed, we offer a comprehensive range of therapies to help you regain a better quality of life.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease caused by the breakdown of cartilage. This cartilage acts as a buffer between bones and reduces friction during movement. Injuries, high stress, and biological age can lead to osteoarthritis. It can occur in the legs (knee osteoarthritis, hip osteoarthritis), back, and theoretically in almost any joint of the human skeleton.

Typical symptoms include pain (e.g., knee pain, back pain), stiffness, and limited mobility. Osteoarthritis pain is a common problem among the aging population. In severe, untreated osteoarthritis, bone wear and inflammation can also occur.

Tendinopathy

Tendinopathy refers to inflammation, injuries, or wear and tear of the tendons that connect muscles to bones. Problems with the body's fascia also fall under this definition.

Fascia are a firm and elastic connective tissue structure that connects the body, organs, and skeletal muscles while also providing elastic separation. Fascia connect almost all structures of the body, from the feet, pelvis, back, and abdomen to the head. Fascia ensure that our body maintains its shape. The exact function of fascia in the active and passive musculoskeletal system is still a subject of research. This condition often occurs due to overuse or acute injuries.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by aching muscles, fatigue, and tenderness in specific body areas. The diagnosis of this condition involves various tests. It is a so-called diagnosis of exclusion, meaning that other causes of the symptoms must first be ruled out. These include bone problems (e.g., fractures), muscle (injuries), or joint issues.

Only after clarification of these structures and a positive outcome of various tests can fibromyalgia be diagnosed. Therapy must be adapted and individualized for each person.

Sports Injuries

Sports injuries often affect bones, muscles, tendons, and joints and can lead to acute or chronic pain. Injuries to muscle fibers, bones, intervertebral discs, or joints often occur due to traumatic impact on the body. These are diagnosed based on clinical symptoms, but sometimes only with imaging procedures such as X-rays or an MRI. Most minor injuries heal without problems. If not, a medical department specializing in the subject should be consulted.

We also classify overuse syndromes such as tennis or golfer's elbow, or back pain due to traumatic muscle injuries, as sports injuries. Early initiation of therapy is important to prevent chronic pain.

At Dolomed, it is important to us to create an individualized treatment plan for each patient.

Rheumatic Diseases

Rheumatic diseases are a group of conditions that affect joints, intervertebral discs, bones, muscles, and ligaments. They are a cause of back pain, bone pain, musculoskeletal pain, swelling, and stiffness. Rheumatic diseases can occur symmetrically or affect only one side of the body. In severe cases, long-term bone damage can occur. Therapy should be coordinated with colleagues in rheumatology, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy to improve quality of life.

Phantom Pain

Tendinopathy refers to inflammation, injuries, or wear and tear of the tendons that connect muscles to bones. Problems with the body's fascia also fall under this definition.

Phantom pain occurs after the amputation of a limb, with pain being felt in the body part that is no longer present. There is no evidence that phantom pain arises from direct damage to bones, muscles, or nerves. Rather, phantom pain arises from a reprogramming in the central nervous system.

Spasticity

Spasticity is muscle stiffness that can occur with neurological conditions. Additionally, involuntary muscle contractions can occur. Initially, the underlying neurological condition should be treated.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

The musculoskeletal system includes all structures responsible for body movement, including bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints.

We offer a variety of treatments, including TENS, neuromodulation, PRP, topical therapy, injections, and ketamine therapy.

You can make an appointment by contacting us at info@dolomed.ch.

Common causes include osteoarthritis, tendinopathy, fibromyalgia, sports injuries, rheumatic diseases, postoperative pain (e.g., after fracture treatment), phantom pain, and spasticity.

TENS uses electrical impulses to relieve pain and promote healing. Depending on the adjustment of various parameters, the nervous system or muscles can be specifically stimulated. This effect can be used specifically for back pain and generally for musculoskeletal pain.

Neuromodulation influences nerve activity to reduce pain and improve quality of life. It is applied for back pain, nerve pain, circulatory disorders, and many other indications.

PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, promotes healing through the use of concentrated platelets from the patient’s own blood. This can then be specifically injected into a site such as an inflamed muscle attachment, tendon, or joint.

In most cases, patients can go home shortly after an injection. However, our team will advise you individually.
